2 Man Derby Recap

On the evening of October 15th, Cottonwood hosted it’s popular 2 man Derby. 13 teams (26 players) competed. Everyone was safe for the first 2 holes which were net aggregate with the 3 high score teams eliminated going in to hole #3. The surviving 10 teams started fresh with the 3 highest net scores being eliminated after each hole. By the time we reach hole #5 it was down to 4 Teams. The sun had set so it was getting dark. Derby organizer John Damron announced that #5 would be the last hole and the winner would be determined via chip off if there was a tie. The 4 Teams were Rob Blaemers/ Dick Braun, Paul Nachant/ Brian Bernier, Robert Schneider/ Dale Hilmen and Armando Torres/Dennis Jamison. The only team to hit the green was Schneider/Hilmen. With 2 teams in tied at bogey 5, all Schneider/Hilmen had to do was two putt the final green. It was really getting dark. Dale Hilmen had a 25ft downhill put that broke left to right. He made a fine run at it, but the ball rolled below the cup and left partner Robert Schneider with tough 4ft uphill putt that broke right to left. Schneider just missed making the putt forcing a 3 team chip off for the first 3 places. Winning the Chip off was Torres/Jamison, in 2nd place was Nachant/Bernier, finishing 3rd was Schneider/Hilmen and rounding it out in 4th place was Blaemers/Braun. The comments about the derby were positive. Players want more derby events in 2016. It is certainly something for the Board of Governors to consider while planning out the Tournament Schedule for 2016. Thanks again to Rob and John for their efforts and thanks to the Cottonwood Bar for the fine food and drinks. This event concluded our Thursday summer series. Don’t forget to mark down Thursday November 19th. That is our popular Turkey Shoot and Election Night. Hope we see you all there.
